Nowhere to Go But Up

The positive side of setbacks is often overlooked.

I am guilty of getting caught up in negative thoughts whenever something doesn’t go my way. I am the type of person who imposes control on every aspect of my life, and when something impacts this control, chaos ensues. Focusing on the uncontrollable aspects of the situation prevents me from escaping the negative headspace.

But there’s only one direction to go when you’ve hit a roadblock: up. Why waste time worrying about things of the past when that time could be spent embracing the future? Obstacles can be such a blessing because they remove the pressure of failing and provide the confidence needed to take risks.

I’ve learned that achievement lies not in getting first place but in making progress towards a goal. Realizing this was the first step in accepting the setback and being optimistic despite everything negative that had happened.
